How much should you have saved at each age?
The Fidelity guideline suggests saving multiples of your salary by certain ages. The ONS figures show what people actually have.
| Age | Fidelity target | At £30k salary | At £50k salary | UK median savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 1x salary | £30,000 | £50,000 | £8,000 |
| 35 | 2x salary | £60,000 | £100,000 | £15,000 |
| 40 | 3x salary | £90,000 | £150,000 | £25,000 |
| 45 | 4x salary | £120,000 | £200,000 | £35,000 |
| 50 | 6x salary | £180,000 | £300,000 | £50,000 |
| 55 | 7x salary | £210,000 | £350,000 | £60,000 |
| 60 | 8x salary | £240,000 | £400,000 | £65,000 |
Fidelity targets include cash, investments, and pension. ONS median is financial wealth only (non-pension, non-property).
What counts as "savings"?
When experts talk about savings targets by age, they usually mean your total financial reserves: cash savings, ISAs, investment accounts, and pension pots. Your pension is the big one that most people forget to include.
Property equity is generally excluded from savings targets because it is not liquid. You cannot easily spend your house. However, it does count towards your net worth.
The Fidelity benchmarks assume a retirement age of 67. If you plan to retire earlier, you will need more. If later, you have more time.
